UV boosts Tas. protection
TasWater has added a new layer of UV-light protection for customers.
TasWater customers in Campbell Town have an additional layer of protection in their drinking water thanks to the installation of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection at the Campbell Town Water Treatment Plant.
TasWater’s Capital Delivery Office (CDO) Senior Project Manager Amanda Allen says construction is now complete after the new technology was commissioned earlier this year.
“The treatment plant is producing UV treated water as expected for our Campbell Town customers,” Amanda said.
“It’s great that our customers in another Tasmanian town now have this extra layer of confidence in their drinking water following recent installations in Bridport, Scottsdale, Bracknell, Westbury, Longford, St Helens and Deloraine.
“We are investing in water quality projects in regional communities across Tasmania to ensure we maintain our 100 per cent annual microbiological compliance.”
UV disinfection does not affect the taste, colour, or odour of the water, but adds an additional layer of protection, further reducing the risk of harmful microbes entering the water supply.
“We know that people get to know and enjoy their local water, and that’s something that this new process won’t change,” Ms Allen says.
“Sunlight is a great disinfectant because it contains UV, and this it basically us replicating that natural process.
“This in another way we can safeguard the quality of water at the Campbell Town Water Treatment Plant.”
TasWater engaged Pensar to carry out the works to install a containerised plant connected to the existing treatment plant.
“Newly installed piping feeds the water to the UV disinfection facility to be treated before it leaves the plant and is delivered to customers,” Ms Allen says.
“UV treatment helps us to meet our priority of providing water that is safe to drink and continuing to meet modern drinking water standards.”
TasWater says it is investing $1.5 billion in its network over the next five years to ensure it can continue to deliver exceptional water and sewerage services for a thriving Tasmania.
