WA appoints Commissioner at Canning
The Western Australian Government has announced the appointment of a commissioner following the suspension of the council of the City of Canning.
Local Government Minister, John Castrilli, said that Commissioner Linton Reynolds will assume the duties of the suspended council.
The council was suspended following an inquiry into its practice, which concluded that the council had systematically failed in the delivery of services to the community.
Mr Castrilli said that Mr Reynolds will assume the role immediately after the suspension came into effect earlier this week.
The appointment of Linton Reynolds as the commissioner comes after an inquiry found that the council had Mr Reynolds has more than 22 years’ experience as a local government councillor, including 10 years as the mayor of the City of Armadale.
He is also chairman of the WA Local Government Grants Commission, a role he has held since 1995.
“Mr Reynolds will provide the leadership required at the City of Canning while the inquiry process is under way and ensure there is continuity of service to the ratepayers and staff during this process,” the Minister said.
“My priority is for the people of the City of Canning to receive good governance and I have taken the steps necessary to ensure that happens.”
