New figures have revealed WA’s most frequently investigated councils.

Figures on the Department of Local Government investigations over the past four years have been tabled in Parliament.

The Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley topped the table at 103, followed by the Shire of York (52), the Town of Port Hedland (41), City of Melville (33) and the City of Perth (31).

The figures represent investigations not just complaints, which a Department spokesperson said do not all result in an investigation.

“At the time of the announcement of the authorised inquiry the department and the minister’s office had received more than 300 pieces of correspondence raising concerns and complaints in relation to the City of Melville,” she said.

“This number continues to grow on a daily basis.

“A single entry in the department’s investigation database represents a single matter being investigated and could have a number of pieces of correspondence attached related to that matter.”

Of the councils receiving the most complaints, many were involved in scandals or council suspensions.

Wyndham-East Kimberley saw a mass resignation of councillors in 2016 after they were issued a show cause notice amid allegations of bullying and harassment.

York council was suspended earlier this year over concerns about its ability to provide good governance.

Perth council was suspended last month after a chaotic period that at one point saw most of its executive team on stress leave.
