Blacktown City Council wins 2013 Stormwater NSW Award for Excellence
Blacktown City Council was recognised at the 2013 Stormwater Industry Association Awards for Excellence recently and announced the winner of the Integrated Stormwater Design category.
The Awards encourage and celebrate excellence in the innovation, development, completion and management of stormwater projects and the people involved.
Council received the award for the submission ‘Blacktown Showground Water Sensitive Urban Design Redevelopment’.
The large project saw water sensitive urban design incorporated into the design of the redeveloped Showground site.
The design features state-of-the-art stormwater harvesting and treatment system, wetlands, rain gardens and the restoration of a creek.
The water harvested from the large rain garden is stored in underground tanks and used throughout the precinct.
While the rain gardens and the wetland are surrounded by a series of boardwalks, café, picnic facilities, community garden and children’s playgrounds.
“The Blacktown Showground site has been transformed into a well-designed community facility”, said Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Len Robinson.
“The design features of the site go beyond the elements that the community are enjoying. The integration of water sensitive urban design is forward thinking and working well for the environment”.
“This recognition at the Stormwater Awards is a testimony to the hard work and effort Council officers have put into this redevelopment. I extend my congratulations to the Council officers involved in the design and construction of this project. Together, they have created a fantastic asset to our City”, Mayor Robinson continued.
Blacktown Showground Precinct is located on Richmond Road, Blacktown and is open daily.
