Adelaide Aquatic Centre Moves Toward Sustainable Future
Work is about to start at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre, providing residents and visitors with a modern, energy efficient place to swim, play and socialise.
In partnership with the Federal Government Energy Efficiency Program, the project will see the installation of high efficiency filters, pumps and boilers and the installation of an energy efficient cogeneration plant for heating. The project will ensure better energy management practices are incorporated into the daily operations of the Adelaide Aquatic Centre.
The work will happen in stages so the Centre will remain open throughout, but some areas won’t be accessible at certain times.
City of Adelaide Deputy Lord Mayor Natasha Malani said the upgrade will ensure the Centre continues to be one of the State’s leading community leisure centres.
“This upgrade reaffirms Council’s commitment to build energy efficient, sustainable infrastructure, as well as our commitment to modernising the Centre and maximising its potential so our community can continue to enjoy it for years to come,” Natasha said.
New water efficient filtration equipment, pool covers on the main and dive pools and new high efficiency condensing boilers will result in significant water and energy savings.
A heat recovery unit will reuse heat in the Centre, and the cogeneration system will generate power from gas and use waste heat for water heating. Upgrades to the ventilation system will ensure it operates more efficiently.
Adelaide City Council’s Active City Program Manager Matthew Rechner said that this next stage of work will bring the pools up to a modern standard.
“As well as the energy efficiency work, an accessible ramp into the 50 metre pool and accessibility lifts to the leisure pool will be installed.
“The pools will also be retiled and interactive water play features will be added, providing even more fun for the kids.”
“Work will start in mid-April on the leisure pool, followed by the 50 metre pool later in the year. We will keep Centre members and the general public informed of what’s happening and when throughout the project,” Matthew said.
It is hoped the new facility will encourage more locals to take up swimming and spend more time being active, enjoying sport and getting exercise in the Adelaide Park Lands.
