Kangaroo Island Mayor Jayne Bates has been recognised for her work with Local Government and her community by being awarded the 2012/13 annual John Legoe Award for Excellence.

Mayor Bates was presented with the award, by Mrs Gayle Legoe, at the 2013 Local Government Showcase and General Meeting Dinner in Adelaide last week.

Mayor Erika Vickery, Narracoorte Lucindale, was awarded the John Legoe Encouragement Award.

The Awards were named in memory of former LGA President and Mayor of Kingston, John Legoe who died in 2005 shortly after completing his term as President.

The Awards in his name recognise Elected Members who have demonstrated commitment to personal development, community service and involvement in promoting their local Council or community. The spirit and intent of the Awards are to recognise personal development and achievement.

Mayor Bates said she was delighted to receive the Award after being elected to Kangaroo Island Council in 2006 as Mayor.

"It is a tremendous honour to win the John Legoe Award and a tremendous honour to represent the fantastic Kangaroo Island community," Mayor Bates said.

"I would like to thank the Legoe family and the LGA for continuing this Award, my Council for nominating me and those who voted for me. This award really recognises that everything is achieved by a team and not an individual."

Mayor Vickery, was elected to Local Government in 2000 and to the Mayoralty in 2010.

"I congratulate Jayne on winning the Excellence Award and I would like to thank the Legoe family and my Council," Mayor Vickery said.

"I am humbled and honoured."
