Barkly Shire Recognised at Territory Tidy Towns
Barkly Shire Council was recognised for its continuing efforts in waste management as part of the Territory Tidy Town Awards in Alice Springs on the weekend.
The Barkly Shire, as partner in the Central Australian Waste Management program, took out the Best Waste Management Initiative Award in conjunction with the Central Desert and MacDonnell Shires. This Award recognises the outstanding work that all three Shires have done especially in relation to its landfill upgrades and highlights the value of collaborative regional partnerships.
“This Award is a reflection of the hard work by all parties involved, and I congratulate everyone for working together for the benefit of the communities” said Shire President Barb Shaw.
“This joint waste management project with our sister Shires further demonstrates that a Central Australian approach can be adopted for a wide range of environmental initiatives to maximize the potential of local resources to achieve real outcomes.”
The Central Australian Waster Management Program was funded by the Territory Government’s Department of Health, assisted by the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory (LGANT), hosted by Central Desert Shire, coordinated by Geof Taylor and delivered by Shire staff in each community.
The Central Australian waste management strategy customizes the way in which landfills are managed in a remote setting. All three shires are working towards a uniform approach for landfill design and management controls which will significantly improve the quality and life of all local landfills. The Barkly Shire has recently completed landfill upgrades at Ampilatwatja and Elliott and has active projects at Ali -Curung and Alpurrurulam, both of which are expected to be completed late 2013.
Titjkala, in the MacDonnell Shire, received the highest accolade of the night taking out the overall Territory Tidy Town Award. The Shire extends its congratulations to Titjkala, a community that is well deserving of this title.
