Bursaries set local students on the path to tertiary study success

Eighteen Logan City tertiary students will find the path to study a little bit easier thanks to the financial support of Logan City Council and 15 local businesses.

The students are the 2014 recipients of the Logan City Tertiary Educational Bursary, and were recognised at a presentation.

Governance, Finance and Economic Development Committee Chairperson, Councillor Luke Smith, said Council was proud to be celebrating the 20th year of supporting local tertiary students through the course of their studies.

“We established the program in 1995 with our solicitor Corrs Chamber Westgarth and provided the bursary to two local financially-disadvantaged students to offset the cost of their courses,” he said.

“Over the past two decades, we’ve been able to help more than 100 students with the costs of travel to their chosen institution, text books and the other costs that students often find hard to cover.

“This year’s recipients are studying a range of courses, from music and photography to science and medicine-related disciplines, and I’m sure they will succeed in their chosen fields after they complete their studies and graduate.”

Cr Smith said each student would receive $3,000 over three years.

“Bursary applicants are assessed on their academic, cultural and community achievements and any special circumstances that adversely affect their family's capacity to meet normal costs of tertiary education,” he said.
