City to Offset Car Emissions

The City of Perth has committed to plant a minimum of 85,000 trees over the next two years to offset our carbon footprint.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said 380,000 trees have been planted since the City of Perth Carbon Offset Tree Planting Program began in 2007.

“Over five million customers use our car parks and the planting of trees in regional WA helps offset the carbon emissions from cars travelling in and out of the city and using City of Perth Parking,” Ms Scaffidi said.

An allocation of $210,000 over two years commencing in 2015/16 has been budgeted to plant a variety of trees including Mallee trees in country Western Australia.

“The carbon offset for vehicle gas emissions is just one benefit of the planting program,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Biodiversity plantings improve the native bird habitat and flora species, as well as the agricultural value of the land; while Mallee trees produce oils and alternative fuel sources, potentially providing future income for the City.”

Businesses and industry in greater Perth produces almost one million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per annum.

“The City is working towards being an energy resilient city – leading collaborative action to achieve a 30 per cent reduction on business-as-usual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

“It’s important we continue to grow as a greener and more sustainable city – developing projects and initiatives to future proof Perth against climate change.

“Creating a sustainable future is part of the Council’s vision and the Tree Planting Program is a key component of that.”
