Communities unite against family violence

Communities unite against family violence
Cairns will unite with other regions across Queensland this Sunday 11 October in making a stand against domestic and family violence.
The Safer Families, Better Communities walk will take place on the Cairns Esplanade, with participants encouraged to step out against domestic and family violence and abuse.
The campaign has been led by the Local Government Association of Queensland, with Cairns Regional Council joining more than 40 councils across the state to unite against domestic and family violence.
“Family violence is an issue that, sadly, affects communities everywhere,” Mayor Bob Manning said. “As a community, we need to stand together and support each other in stamping out domestic and family violence.”
Participants are invited to gather at 10am near the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon for a community walk against domestic and family violence. The walk will proceed to Muddy’s Playground and return to the lagoon, where there will be family activities until 1pm.
“We urge all Cairns residents to be a part of this very important event,” Cr Manning said. “We all deserve to feel safe and secure within our own family environments. These are the people who should support and protect each other. No one should ever feel threatened or scared of the people they love.
“But when there is abuse, no one should be afraid to speak up and to seek help.
“As a community, let’s pledge our support for an end to domestic and family violence.”
Post-walk activities will include a barbecue, jumping castle and face painting. Information on domestic and family violence support services will be available.
All members of the public are invited to participate in the event. Join the discussion and pledge your support to end domestic and family violence on social media by using the hashtag #saferfamilies.
