Council, CQ University combine to help young engineers

A scholarship partnership between Bundaberg Regional Council and Central Queensland University’s Bundaberg Campus is aimed at addressing a chronic shortage of engineers in rural and regional Queensland.

Council is currently offering a 2015 Engineering Scholarship – Year 1 valued at $19,200.

Mayor Mal Forman said the scholarship provided a student with financial assistance towards the cost of study and the opportunity to combine their study with work experience at Council.

“The scholarship offers 12 weeks paid vacation work with Bundaberg Regional Council during the University’s 2015/16 Christmas break period.”

He said that while there are certain eligibility criteria to be met including a Bundaberg Region residency requirement, the scholarship selection criteria included academic achievement, career aspirations tied to professional engineering and a focus on extra-curricular achievements and activities.

Cr Forman said the recognition of Bundaberg as a University City and the ongoing Accord Agreement between the Council and CQU Bundaberg Campus demonstrated the commitment and vision Council and the University shared in promoting educational opportunities at a regional level.

“Already several engineering students who have been recipients of this form of scholarship support are progressing through their course at the University.

“Offering this scholarship is a tangible means by which Council is supporting a requirement for more skilled professionals to be available within our region and also supporting the excellent learning institution we have in our own community.”
