Council supports Fatality Free Friday

Hawkesbury City Council is promoting Fatality Free Friday throughout May – an initiative to draw community attention to the personal role we can all play in making NSW roads safer.

In support of the campaign, Transport for NSW has created six inflatable cars to display at local shopping centres, market days and sports events around the state. The inflatable cars will act as a major drawcard for the campaign and community members are encouraged to sign the cars to take the pledge.

An inflatable car will be making an appearance at Council's tent at the Hawkesbury Show on Friday, 9 May until Sunday, 11 May from 9am – 5pm.

The inflatable car will also be available for signing on Sunday, 18 May at the Windsor Mall Craft Markets and at various Shopping centre outlets (dates to be advised) to give community members a chance to take the pledge, according to Hawkesbury City Council's Community Safety Co-ordinator, Judy Wong.

"While law enforcement and road rules are the backbone of safe roads, there is no substitute for driver vigilance and road users making a personal commitment to safe driving behaviour," Ms Wong said.

"We need to avoiding drink driving, keep to the speed limit and take rest breaks.

"The core message is clear – the key to road safety is in our hands. We encourage everyone to get involved with Fatality Free Friday by pledging their commitment to keeps our roads safe," she added.

Fatality Free Friday involves a two-month community engagement campaign which will culminate on Fatality Free Friday on Friday, 30 May. Road users including drivers, riders and pedestrians will be encouraged to learn more about road safety and sign the safe behaviour pledge.

As well as having the opportunity to sign the cars at various locations, people will also receive information on road safety issues such as pedestrian safety, breakdown safety, top 10 misunderstood road rules, older drivers, child restraints and used car safety ratings.

Fatality Free Friday is run by the Australian Road Safety Foundation which is a not for profit organisation established to reduce road trauma across Australia. Road users can also take the Fatality Free Friday pledge by visiting www.fatalityfreefriday.com or by visiting the Fatality Free Friday Facebook page.

In addition to the support of Fatality Free Friday, Council will also host two free Road Safety events.
