Council welcomes extra funding for storm damage

Wyong Shire Council has welcomed the announcement from the State and Commonwealth governments to extend the claim period following the April storm.

The April storm left a trail of devastation across the Shire and Council is still working to fix the damage left behind.

Council’s Manager of Waterways and Asset Management, Mr Peter Ham, said the extra funding will definitely help with storm recovery.

“It’s great the governments have not only extended the claim period but have also added an additional $9.8 million to the assistance pool,” Mr Ham said.

“We were left with more than $5million worth of damage across the Shire and could only claim for works done in the 21 days after the storm.

“Today’s announcement means we can now claim extra funding to help with the clean-up costs undertaken right up until July 31 2015.

“Some of our residents are still recovering from the destruction the storm created and we are feeling it too with a number of our community assets still in need of some repair.

“It’s great to see the higher levels of government doing their bit to help our community get its feet back on track.”
