Council wins grant for estuary work

Hornsby Shire Council’s efforts to save the local estuaries has been boosted by a $74,000 grant from the NSW Government.

“The competition for these grants is very fierce and it’s a sign of the excellent work that’s being done by our staff that we were able to secure part of the funding pie,” Hornsby Shire Mayor Steve Russell said.

“The grant is an acknowledgement of both the strong work that’s been done in the past and our vision for the future.”

The grant comes from the Office of Environment and Heritage, with $50,000 earmarked for the monitoring of the Hawkesbury River’s waterways and $24,000 to go towards rehabilitation and management of riparian zones.

“Maintaining the health of the Hawkesbury is one of Council’s primary goals and is a cornerstone of life at that end of the Shire,” Mayor Russell said.

“It’s not just about protecting the environment and wildlife, but also important industries such as tourism and fishing that bring millions of dollars into our local economy every year.

“Once again I’d like to congratulate and thank Council’s staff for the excellent work they continue to do.”
