Crown St Mall goes smoke free

Wollongong City Council is working to create a healthy city with a clean and inviting environment by introducing a smoke free area throughout the Crown Street Mall from Friday 1 November.

Council has sought public opinion on the Smoke Free zones and more than 85 per cent of people surveyed agree that the Crown Street Mall should be a smoke free zone.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM said there is overwhelming community support for a smoke free zone in the city.

“Smoking is one of the major causes of preventable death in our society,” Cr Bradbery said. “Any steps that Council can make towards enhancing our city and the experience that people have when visiting our Crown Street Mall will make for a better and more enjoyable place.”

To achieve the aim of protecting our environment Council has voted to create a smoke free zone throughout the Mall from 1 November. This will include Crown Street, from Keira Street to Kembla Street, Globe Lane, Globe Way, and Church Street from Globe Lane to Court Lane.

There will be no designated smoking areas in the Mall. Anyone wishing to smoke will have to leave the Mall to an area where smoking is permitted.

Council will rely on education and awareness to encourage all community members not to smoke in the Mall. Council anticipates that the campaign, signs and warnings of infringement notices from Council officers will curb people’s smoking in the Mall.

In 2010 Wollongong Council introduced a Smoke Free Recreations Area Policy which prohibits smoking in the following areas:

  • Within 10 metres of all children’s playgrounds
  • All Council outdoor sporting facilities and skate parks
  • All Council Leisure Centres and public swimming pools.
  • The NSW Government introduced new smoking laws on 7 January 2013. Smoking in the following areas is not allowed:
  • within four metres of a pedestrian access point to a building
  • within 10 metres of children’s play equipment
  • public swimming pools and sports grounds
  • public transport stops and stations

From July 2015 it will be an offence to smoke in outdoor dining areas.
