Draft Stonnington Cycling Strategy released for community input

The City of Stonnington is seeking feedback on its Draft Stonnington Cycling Strategy 2013-2018 which aims to enhance the physical and social environments in order to support more people to cycle, and cycle more often, in Stonnington.

City of Stonnington Mayor Cr Adrian Stubbs said “Council recognises that the popularity of cycling continues to grow in our City and throughout the world.

“We’re working toward fostering a positive cycling culture in Stonnington where cycling participation is encouraged and increased, networks and facilities are provided for, and programs and initiatives are delivered to enhance the skills of cyclists,” added Cr Stubbs.

Council’s vision for cycling in Stonnington is that:

Cycling will be widely undertaken in Stonnington, whether for fun, fitness or travel – providing health, economic, social and environmental benefits to the community. Participation will be encouraged by facilities, programs and services.

Travel throughout Stonnington by bicycle will be easy and safe, supported by a comprehensive network of accessible and convenient paths, laneways and trails that are accompanied by facilities that provide for resting and storing / securing bicycles. It will be particularly easy to access local facilities and gathering places.

The Strategy focuses on five strategic directions:

  • Encourage participation in cycling;
  • Facilitate the development of safe, accessible, legible, functional and appropriate cycling options and initiatives;
  • Continue to develop and improve the cycling network and associated facilities;
  • Support people at their destinations; and
  • Champion the creation of a thriving and diverse local cycling culture.
