Enhancing our local estuaries

Tweed Shire Council receives $50,000 for Clothiers, Reserve and Christies Creeks

Mayor of Tweed, Councillor Barry Longland has welcomed a $50,000 grant from the State Government to manage, enhance and protect local estuaries.

The funding - which will be matched by Tweed Shire Council - comes from the NSW Government’s Estuary Management Program, which is administered by the Office of Environment and Heritage.

"Degradation of the coastal flood plain through drainage modification for agriculture is a key issue affecting water quality in the Tweed coastal estuaries," Councillor Longland said.

"The project will address hotspots which produce acid in the Clothiers, Reserve and Christies Creeks.

"Council has had success working with the sugar cane industry to overcome acid soil problems, which occur due to coastal floodplain degradation and drainage modification.

"The aim of the project is to improve aquatic habitat and water quality through identifying drains for remediation, carrying out the remediation and improving land management capability.

"I'd like to thank the Member for Tweed, Geoff Provest MP, for his work in securing this important grant," he said.
