Families and anglers hooked thanks to Borumba’s restocking program

Lake Borumba's annual fish restocking program has proven its worth this summer, with keen anglers and families flocking to the popular recreational area to make the most of the good fishing.

Campground managers have reported solid site bookings throughout the season, particularly during the Christmas-New Year period.

Tourism and Mary Valley Portfolio Councillor, Cr Julie Walker, said the successful season served to highlight the importance of fish restocking programs for the tourism industry and regional economy in general.

"Programs such as this are important because they invest in the future sustainability of our recreational waterways and, in turn, deliver real benefits to local businesses and the wider community," said Cr Walker.

Cr Walker is the Patron of the Lake Borumba Fish Stocking Group and assisted with the release of 40,000 Australian Bass fingerlings into the lake's catchment last month and 40,000 Golden Perch and 20,000 Silver Perch in early February.

The fingerlings were provided by SEQ Fish of Luscombe and Murgon's Handwood Hatchery as part of the annual Stock Impoundment Permit System (SIPS) and Gympie Regional Council-funded programs.

The total cost of this fish release is $26,000 of which Gympie Regional Council provided $6000 and the balance is made up of SIPS funding from the state government.

Cr Walker said a portion of the free from fishing permits in Lake Borumba, and other impoundments around the state, is allocated to restocking certain waterways.

"You can nominate which impoundment your fee supports, so I encourage everyone to support their local recreational waterway as part of this process," said Cr Walker.
