Funding helps Corrimal Community Centre
Wollongong City Council will begin work on the refurbishment of the Corrimal District Library and Community Centre following a Local Infrastructure Renewal Scheme funding. The project will also enable Council to remove the two ageing buildings in Corrimal’s Memorial Park.
“This funding will enable Council to refurbish and upgrade the wonderful centre and library at Corrimal,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM said. “It will help us to renew the existing kitchen, give the centre a new lick of paint, put down new floor coverings, upgrade the lighting, install a shade sail and renew a section of library shelving.
“This is about the best use of our quality community centres and facilities. In the meantime we will be able to remove the two buildings in Memorial Park as the continued use by the community is simply not viable and the seniors groups using these buildings are now using the new facilities in the Community Centre.
“This use of our facilities will help Council alleviate the costs involved with the care and maintenance of these old buildings.”
At the same time we regain valuable parkland for all community members to enjoy the outdoor spaces.
Corrimal Memorial Park Playground provides a play experience for all children. Council has entered a Memorandum of Understanding with the Touched by Olivia Foundation to deliver a playground for all children including those with physical and intellectual disabilities.
Council will contribute $125,000 towards the development of an inclusive playground together with landscape features and play equipment.
Council has undertaken engagement with community members and school children on the desires and types of play equipment for the Memorial Park upgrade. Council will call for tenders on for new playground equipment shortly.
Council received LIRS funding of $5.5 million for upgrade and refurbishment of the Berkeley Community Centre, Corrimal Community Centre and Library, and the refurbishment and adaptive reuse of the Thirroul Beach Kiosk and Pavilion.
