Fyans Park Kinder $1.2M extension

Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons welcomed today’s announcement by the State Government to contribute funding towards an extension of Fyans Park Kindergarten in Newtown.

“I’m delighted that State Government is contributing $350,000 to the extension of Fyans Park Kindergarten”, said Mayor Lyons.

“It’s fitting that in its 50-year anniversary year this popular kindergarten will benefit from an extension to more than double capacity and a refurbishment in line with a 21st century early childhood centre.”

Kildare Ward Councillor Stretch Kontelj said the extension is much needed.

“Fyans Park Kindergarten has a well-deserved reputation for its high quality program and professional staff, and as a result there is high demand for places.”

“The $1.2 million of works will increase the number of places from 29 to 66 and vastly improve office space, storage and playground areas”, said Cr Kontelj.

“A new shared consulting space/parenting room will be created to accommodate visiting services including maternal and child health as well as other early childhood professionals.”

“This is a big win for the many young families in the Newtown and Geelong West area”, said Cr Kontelj.

Community Development Portfolio Councillor Kylie Fisher said the City of Greater Geelong’s contribution of $863,000 to the $1.2 million project continues Council’s strong investment in early childhood services.

“Research continues to tell us that high quality preschool programs pave the way for bright futures”.

“We’re investing heavily in early childhood”, said Cr Fisher, “with four other children’s centres – Barwon Heads, Grovedale, Leopold and Norlane - due to open for the start of the 2015 school year.”
