G20 Leaders Summit

In November 2014, Brisbane will host the Group of Twenty (G20) Leaders Summit, the principal forum for international economic cooperation and decision-making. Over the days of the event, Brisbane will become capital city of the world, with leaders from the world's most influential economies gathering in our city.

Held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 15 and 16 November, the event is expected to attract more than 4000 officials and 3000 media representatives from around the world.

The G20's permanent membership comprises of 19 of the world's most powerful countries plus the European Union. Guest countries including Singapore and New Zealand, and international organisations are also invited to attend. As an annual event, the G20 gives world leaders the chance to share ideas and outline visions regarding key international issues.

G20 is the most significant international event held in Brisbane since the 1982 Commonwealth Games and Expo 88. It will showcase Brisbane as a world class destination for business, tourism, education and events.

Economic Benefits
The economic benefits to Brisbane are expected to run in excess of $100 million, with an upsurge in trade for local shops, hotels, and restaurants.

All eyes will turn to Brisbane with the G20 attracting significant national and international media coverage. This worldwide attention will bring on-going tourism benefits, as well as business interest which will generate long term investment and encourage more international business relationships.

In the lead up to the 2014 summit, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has asked Brisbane Marketing to work on a series of initiatives to ensure the city fully capitalises on the opportunities that come from the global spotlight falling on this event.

Impacts on Brisbane
Council will work closely with residents and businesses to ensure the city remains open and accessible throughout the event. Services such as waste collection, public transport and street maintenance will continue with as few disruptions as possible. Any changes to normal services will be communicated to the community in advance of the G20 Leaders Summit.

Most of the city will remain unaffected with normal services being available for a long weekend. Council's aim throughout the event is to balance the needs of Brisbane's businesses and residents with the safety and security requirements of Commonwealth and State Governments.

There will be some impact such as some changes to public transport in and around the Central Business District and South Bank, some road closures and diversions, and some changes to services in directly affected areas.

Public holiday
Queensland Government has declared a public holiday for the Brisbane Local Government Area on Friday 14 November 2014 to help manage impacts around the city. Details of this holiday can be found on the Queensland Government website.
