Grafton artists win once-in-a-lifetime fellowship to New York
Clarence Valley artists Sammy Lovejoy and Danny Loyden lit up Grafton in Light Up 2014 and their skill and determination to excel in projection art will now take them to New York with the assistance of the Yulgilbar Travelling Fellowship and Grafton Regional Gallery.
Gallery director, Jude McBean, said Ms Lovejoy and Mr Loyden made one of several high calibre submissions for the fellowship.
“However, their partnership application thrilled the assessment panel with its energy and well-planned proposal to use the fellowship to travel to New York, USA, and immerse themselves in some outstanding projection art experiences,” she said.
The artists have nominated at least two contemporary art festivals that specialise in digital arts – the 2015 Lumen Festival in Staten Island and the biennial New York Electronic Art Festival.
“Our application was based on our positive experiences and feedback from Light Up the Valley 2014.”
Ms Lovejoy said the fellowship opportunity would help them expand their knowledge, networks and give them access, visually and verbally, to an incredible level of skills and inspiration they could bring back to influence, inform and inspire future projection art projects in the Clarence Valley, including Light Up the Valley 2015.
Ms McBean said the $10,000 fellowship provided a significant opportunity for Clarence Valley artists to have experiences they couldn’t ordinarily afford.
“The fellowship is a wonderful professional development opportunity for the artists that will benefit our valley’s cultural life,” she said.
“The Grafton Regional Gallery will be working with Ms Lovejoy and Mr Loyden to ensure they get the best opportunities they can while they’re there.”
