Help for schools to be ResourceSmart
Schools in the region have more help to develop environmental programs following the appointment of a ResourceSmart facilitator for East Gippsland.
Under the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative Victoria (AuSSI Vic), ResourceSmart facilitators help schools develop programs to minimise waste, save energy and water and improve biodiversity.
Hilary Rigg has taken on the facilitator role and will spend one day a week supporting schools. Ms Rigg works in primary and secondary schools and has a Bachelor of Applied Science and Primary Education.
ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic Regional Coordinator Lisa Benn said Ms Rigg’s appointment gives schools a local contact to support them to implement sustainable practices.
“Schools will benefit from her experience in sustainability and her knowledge of other organisations in the area that can help them on their ResourceSmart journey.
“With Hilary’s facilitated support, schools can work through a module of their choice – core, biodiversity, energy, waste or water and upon completion will be recognised for their achievements at a state-wide level,” Ms Benn said.
Sustainability Victoria has provided funding to support this position which is based out of East Gippsland Shire Council’s Bairnsdale offices. Mayor Cr Richard Ellis said the position supports Council’s role in working with the community to reduce resource use.
“We are happy to assist schools and the community where we can,” Cr Ellis said.
Gippsland Regional Waste Management Group leads a group of stakeholders including councils, government and non-government agencies working to support schools to undertake the ResourceSmart program.
