Improvements for visitors to Dangar Falls Reserve
Visitors to Dorrigo’s popular recreation destination, Dangar Falls Reserve will benefit from the recent improvements to the pathway, Labyrinth and bushland area.
Bellingen Shire Mayor, Cr Mark Troy announced that Stage 2 of the pathway upgrade has now reopened in time for the school holidays. “The old bitumen pathway between the two wooden walkways has been replaced with a new, raised wooden walkway to improve the safety, accessibility and appearance of this important environmental and community asset”, added the Mayor.
Council is also working with the Labyrinth community volunteers and Dorrigo Men’s Shed to install a stoneware centre piece in the Labyrinth and a timber bench seat in the park land beside the Labyrinth. Funding was received from the State Government’s Public Reserves Management Fund Program for the pathway and Labyrinth improvements.
Bush regeneration contractors have been implementing a weed control blitz over the last three months with over three hectares of native vegetation at Dangar Falls Reserve being enhanced by initial weed control. This includes an area of Antarctic Beech cool temperate rainforest which has considerable conservation significance. Species of significance include Nothofagus moorei (Antarctic Beech) and Denhamia moorei (Mountain Denhamia).
The priority has been strategic treatment of privet, fog grass, wandering jew and honeysuckle with a particular focus on clearing weeds around native plant seedlings. This approach promotes the natural growth of native seedlings by removing competition from smothering weeds without causing over exposure.
This project is part of ‘The Jaliigirr Project’ being implemented by Bellingen Shire Council through the Federal Government’s Clean Energy Future Biodiversity Fund led by North Coast Local Land Services. Council is currently confirming funding to continue bush regeneration throughout 2015/16.
To guide future investment and management priorities, Council has been working with Crown Lands to finalise the Plan of Management for Dangar Falls Reserve.
