Improving access for people with disabilities

A new recharge scheme in Greater Dandenong is improving accessibility for people with disabilities.

Power points will be provided at a number of locations across the city, giving people the opportunity to recharge their scooters and wheelchairs no matter where they are.

The RECHARGE Scheme was originally launched in February 2006 and since then more than a thousand businesses and 75 councils are now working in partnership to offer the service to people with disabilities.

Community Services Director Mark Doubleday said Council had chosen to participate in the RECHARGE Scheme to give all members of its community easy access.

“The last thing we want is people who use electric scooters and wheelchairs getting stranded due to a flat battery,” he said.

“Having locations around the city where people can charge their wheelchairs assists in reducing the isolation often felt by people with a disability.”

Charging stations will be located at the following locations around the city.

  • The Springvale Library
  • Noble Park Aquatic Centre (NPAC)
  • Parkmore Customer Service Centre
  • Springers Leisure Centre
  • Oasis Leisure Centre
  • The Drum Theatre
  • Springvale Town Hall

RECHARGE Scheme stickers will be placed on the windows of participating businesses making them easy to find, as well as stickers above the power points to show which ones are dedicated to the service.
