International Volunteer Day 2013

To celebrate International Volunteer Day on Thursday December 5 2013, Lithgow City Council will be holding a special “Thank You” afternoon tea for Lithgow’s many dedicated volunteers at Eskbank House and Museum.

International Volunteer Day marks the date when the wider community can recognise and appreciate the amazing and vital contributions volunteers make.

Volunteers contribute their time, knowledge, efforts and expertise to help make a difference to people and to the community as a whole. Volunteering embodies the sense of giving without asking for anything in return.

“Each year volunteers contribute countless hours of unpaid work, give up their time to help others and are dedicated and passionate about what they do,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham. “Volunteers are a vital part of the community and their generosity and dedication enhance the communities they are part of” continued the Mayor.

“We have all witnessed in recent weeks the amazing and selfless work undertaken by volunteer fire-fighters and in protecting homes and properties across Lithgow and the Blue Mountains as well as the wonderful work undertaken by many individuals and volunteer organisations in supporting the fire-fighters and the community generally. International Volunteer Day is a great opportunity to once again say thank you to these people,” concluded the Mayor.

An afternoon tea will be held at Eskbank House and Museum, Corner of Inch Street and Bennett Streets Lithgow on Thursday December 5 from 4.00-6.00pm. All people who volunteer in any capacity as well as local volunteer organisations are invited to enjoy an afternoon in the beautiful Eskbank House garden and to celebrate the wonderful contributions that volunteers make to the community.

International Volunteer Day is also an opportunity to heighten awareness of the importance of volunteering and to encourage the broader community to think about volunteering themselves. Volunteers really are at the heart of strong and connected communities.

Celebrating and growing volunteering forms part of Council's Caring for our Community strategies in the Community Strategic Plan 2025.
