Learn to spot weeds and grow natives

Gympie Regional Council will have a display at this year's Gympie Garden Expo to be held Saturday and Sunday, 3-4 May 2014, where attendees can learn about weeds and pests, as well as native plants that they can grow in their garden.

Cr Wayne Sachs said "This follows on from the successful display last year and is part of council's commitment to ongoing community education, particularly in terms of weed and pest management matters."

It will provide information about declared weeds and pest animals, as well as information about native plants, particularly those suited to local gardens," he said.

With more and more lifestyle and semi-rural properties around the region, there is a growing need for residents to learn more about property maintenance, including weed and pest management responsibilities.

The peri-urban landholders in particular are of a diverse demographic mix and manage their land differently and are a key target group for raising awareness.

Many people are interested in growing natives and the council's Lands Protection and Environmental Planning teams will be at the show sharing great tips and information that is specific to the region as well as everything from weed identification to control measures for weed and animal pests.

Cr Sachs said, "Effective pest management requires commitment and participation by the whole community and I encourage landholders to visit council's display at the expo", he said.

The Gympie Garden Expo is being held at the Gympie Showgrounds, Exhibition Road, Southside, from 3-4 May 2014.
