Light shone on inspiring youngsters

An international student who translated messages left in Martin Place following the Lindt Cafe siege, an Indigenous youngster running free fitness sessions and a team delivering live underage music gigs across the City are among the winners of the annual Betty Makin Youth Awards.

All of the above and the awards themselves honour the life and spirit of one of Redfern’s great community leaders, Betty Makin, who improved the lives of many locals by serving on voluntary community support groups.

Hosted by the City of Sydney, the awards aim to recognise the valuable contribution young people make to the community and to award their outstanding work, during Youth Week in the City celebrations.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the awards, held at Redfern Town Hall on Monday night, featured inspiring young people and youth workers and Police officers who work with young people.

“The City is proud to continue hosting these annual awards, which honour the great Redfern community leader who devoted so much time and energy to help young people,” the Lord Mayor said.

“The young are our future leaders and innovators and taking time to recognise their achievements is very important for us as a council – especially seeing the recipients do so much to help others and their local community.”
