Mayor calls for rail delay rethink
The City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts is imploring the State Government to reconsider pushing back the start of the rail extension from Butler to Yanchep and said the recent announcement is nothing short of outrageous.
"This extension is an urgent necessity to those living beyond Butler in the fastest growing local authority in Western Australia," said Mayor Roberts.
"In 2011 the State Government deemed the rail extension a priority in its draft public transport plan, so why is it now being pushed back? We want answers.
"There are communities being built as we speak that need vital public transport infrastructure. Currently the only option is the limited bus routes around the area.
"The City is welcoming 21 new residents every day and many of them are moving into the very areas that desperately need this extension.
"The corridor that encompasses Butler, Jindalee, Alkimos, Eglinton, Yanchep and Two Rocks is expected to have over 43,000 residents by 2018 with an upward trend to be well over 55,000 in 2021.
"We need immediate support from the State Government to deliver a solution for our residents. It's not acceptable for this to be placed on the backburner."
