On the pathway towards a sustainable future for our City
See all the good work the City of Stonnington has done to become more sustainable by checking out the Sustainability Snapshot, which is now available online and in our libraries and service centres.
The Sustainability Snapshot 2013–14 reflects a busy year for Council, providing a summary of its key environmental issues and opportunities, goals and objectives and key actions and performance highlights from the last 12 months.
It also sets the environmental focus for activity over the next 12 months, clearing the pathway towards a more sustainable future for our City.
City of Stonnington Mayor, Cr Melina Sehr said that the Snapshot measures Council's performance against the key objectives outlined in the Sustainable Environment Strategy 2013–2017.
"I am pleased that Council has made excellent environmental progress in 2013–14, especially with strong community involvement through a number of activities," Cr Sehr said.
"This Snapshot demonstrates Council's commitment to creating a healthy and sustainable City. We've taken great leaps towards meeting our strategic environmental priorities, including reducing the amount of waste to landfill, conserving energy and improving our local biodiversity," Cr Sehr said.
The City of Stonnington has introduced a number of programs aimed at reducing its carbon footprint.
"Through our dedicated energy efficiency program, including the installation of solar panels, building retrofits and street lighting upgrades, we're on track to meet our greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 20 per cent reduction by 2015," said Cr Sehr.
In the past financial year, key achievements include:
- Opening the Stonnington Environmental Education and Design (SEED) Centre at T H King Pavilion following extensive redevelopment works. The venue showcases Environmentally Sustainable Design features alongside the Glen Iris wetlands.
- Solar panels installed on Council buildings including Grattan Gardens, Phoenix Park, Prahran Aquatic Centre and Toorak and Malvern libraries.
- Retrofitting of Council buildings to reduce energy consumption and gas emissions and save money.
- Nine new recycling drop-off points across Council, which accept used batteries, mobile phones and chargers, floppy disks, cassette tapes, VHS, DVDs, CDs and cases. During the initial three-month trial in 2013–14, a total of 1.5 tonnes of materials were diverted for recycling.
- Completed Stage 2 of the Yarra River Biodiversity Linkages Project – a project aimed at enhancing local biodiversity and waterway health along the Yarra River.
