Open Space - What future do you want?

Long-term strategy for creating open space

Council has prepared a 20 year plan to address the important community issue of creating open space in Stonnington, which has the second lowest amount of public open space per capita of all Victorian councils.

Our work has been carefully considered and has involved exploring a range of options, including, for example, undergrounding car parks and providing open space and parkland on top, promoting and encouraging green roofs and walls, extending existing green spaces and exploring developments of new urban and green spaces.

This is a long-term strategy for the whole community....

  • Creating open space is about the health and wellbeing of everyone who works, plays or lives in Stonnington.
  • Council is not compulsorily acquiring properties, rather, looking to identify and reserve land for future public open space should that land become available at some future time.
  • Council is carefully and strategically pursuing open space opportunities by identifying options based on partnerships, negotiations and agreements.

What future do you want?

With increased development and population growth, if we don't actively pursue public open space opportunities, Stonnington will become quite a different place.

We see a future with creative and attractive open space options for our children, our grandchildren and for all future generations, so what future do you want?
