Partnership approach urged for Plan Melbourne
Partnership approach urged for Plan Melbourne
At the Council meeting, City of Port Phillip Councillors endorsed a submission to the Department of Transport, Planning, and Local Infrastructure in response to the public release of Plan Melbourne - the State Government’s new Metropolitan Planning Strategy to the year 2050.
The key points outlined in the Council’s submission include advocating for early investment in transport and social infrastructure to ensure that inner-city neighbourhoods remain vibrant, attractive and accessible. To support this goal the submission highlights the importance of further early investment in new public transport and that funding is provided to build it.
The submission also highlights that a continued strong partnership is required between state and local government, the private sector, and the community in order to realise the Plan’s Strategic Directions. At a local level, Councillors reaffirmed their desire to see Fisherman’s Bend planned and renewed as an internationally recognized highly successful urban renewal strategy and a model of urban innovation.
A key priority is to ensure that metropolitan planning policies support greater choice in housing types and to strengthen the socio-demographic diversity the Port Phillip municipality already enjoys. Councillors also urged sound economic planning to deliver high productivity jobs and to attract new investment in appropriate new industry sectors.
Overall, the submission expresses support for the high level objectives and directions of Plan Melbourne.
