Personal mobility devices allowed on bikeways and footpaths
Brisbane City Council wishes to advise residents and visitors to the city that as of 1 August 2013, personal mobility devices (PMD) will be permitted for use on footpaths, shared pathways and bikeways in Queensland.
The new regulation was gazetted by the Queensland Government. Brisbane City Council will allow personal mobility devices (PMDs) to be used on bikeways and footpaths. The regulation only allows travel on roadways for a short distance of less than 50 metres if there is an obstruction on the footpath or bikeway.
Council has prohibited the use of PMDs in areas such as malls and grassed areas in parks. Users will also not be allowed to take PMDs on Council’s buses and ferries.
Signage will be installed for the city’s malls and other CBD sites in mid-August. Council will monitor the impacts of the operation of PMDs within the city.
Council will establish an assessment and approval process for managing applications for commercial PMD activities within or on Council controlled land.
