Plenty of sidewalk action in the City Centre
Customers are lining up to get their hands on home-made gelato, bohemian home wares and to take part in the latest free fitness classes in the City Centre.
Seven new businesses have opened up in the Mackay City Centre in the last two months including Gelatissimo, Crave Frozen Yoghurt; Let the Children Play, Bohage Furnishings, Nail Bar, Perfect Pointe and Victoria Street Markets; along with a new Active in the City program.
Tourism and Economic Development portfolio councillor Greg Martin said our City Centre is bustling with activity.
“Our long term goal is to transform the city centre into a place where residents and visitors can work, shop and be active and it’s starting to happen,” Cr Martin said.
“New and vibrant businesses are opening up and more people are dining, exercising and shopping in the City Centre than ever before.”
Gelatissmo owner Michael Cullen said he’s going through 600 litres of gelato a week and has had to find a second milk supplier to keep up with demand.
“People of all ages are also exercising in the City Centre and taking advantage of the free Active in the City classes, Zumba, dog walking groups and get fit boxing for mums and kids,” Cr Martin said.

The City Centre Taskforce comprising of City Centre and council representatives will meet again next Friday (January 31) to make sure our City Centre continues to head in the right direction of a vibrant, invigorating and dynamic precinct.
Council is currently seeking expressions of interest for our $18.6 million CBD revitalisation project and public art project. Applications for the CBD revitalisation project close on February 11 and the public art on March 14.
