Port Phillip Welcomes City-Shaping Opportunity

The City of Port Phillip today welcomed the draft Vision for the Fishermans Bend Urban Renewal Area.

Acting-Mayor of the City of Port Phillip, Cr Bernadene Voss said, “The draft Vision sets out a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect the city to the bay and shape a new Melbourne for future generations.”

“Fishermans Bend will let more people enjoy the unique, diverse City of Port Phillip lifestyle. It will be a place for more jobs and innovative development – be it residential, commercial, community, social or cultural. It will be a place for families and children, for young people and old, for everyone to enjoy.

“For this vision to succeed, we see early upfront investment in community infrastructure, particularly schools and public transport, as critical. We’re pleased the Victorian Government agrees,” she said.

Cr Voss said, “I am especially pleased the Vision protects the area’s interface with existing communities in Port and South Melbourne to preserve their distinctive character.

“As Councillor and a local resident, and especially as a mother, I welcome this Vision; it should bear fruit for Port Phillip, and wider Melbourne, well into the adult lives of my three young children,” she said.

“Now we want our community – and this is our community; 90 per cent of this renewal area falls within the City of Port Phillip – to tell us what they think. Their feedback, and that of other Victorians, will guide our future direction and decisions,” she said.

Launching the draft Vision with the Premier, the Minister for Planning and the Lord Mayor, Cr Voss thanked the Victorian Government for championing the partnership approach to the work done to date.

“The City of Port Phillip is great at building communities. We will bring our local knowledge, expertise and experience to this partnership to benefit our local community,” Cr Voss said.

Cr Voss thanked the team from Places Victoria; the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure; the City of Melbourne; and the officers from the City of Port Phillip.

“The draft Vision reflects the strengths we have each brought into this partnership, strengths that will become even more important as we work to see the Vision realised,” Cr Voss said.

“The team’s hard work and collaboration has produced a result which we can all be proud of,” she said.
