Randwick City celebrates NAIDOC Week
We all Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate
As Naidoc banners fly across the City, Randwick City Council is encouraging every resident, young and old, to join the celebration in recognising the culture and significance of indigenous Australians, locally and nationally.
The national theme – We all Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate – highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' strong spiritual and cultural connection to land and sea.
Across the city this week, events and celebrations will recognise our area's cultural significance and Randwick Mayor Ted Seng said it's a great opportunity to celebrate and reflect.
"Randwick City is the proud home of many culturally significant land and sea locations of the Bidijgal people, of the Dharawal nation," Mayor Seng said.
"We're proud of the strong local connection our indigenous families have with the land and sea, which is exactly what this year's theme is all about.
"NAIDOC Week is an opportunity to pay respect to country and continue to honour those who work tirelessly on preserving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and spiritual sites," Mayor Seng said.
"A spiritual site or sacred places is not just locations with traditional rock art or engravings. It can be geographic locations like a beach, bays, inlets, bushland or places used for gathering for cultural practices.
"I hope everyone in Randwick City takes the opportunity to attend an event and Learn, Respect and Celebrate all the wonderful parts of our nation's indigenous people, culture and history," Mayor Seng said.
