Randwick Mayor Noel D’Souza rules out parking meters

Randwick Mayor Noel D’Souza has today reassured local residents and businesses that there are no plans to introduce onstreet parking meters in Randwick City.

“I can’t say it more simply than this – there are no plans to introduce onstreet parking meters,” Mayor D’Souza said. “Anybody who suggests to the contrary is either misinformed or is being deliberately mischievous.”

There are no onstreet parking meters in Randwick City and only two offstreet metered car parks at Coogee Beach which have eight meters covering 144 parking spaces charging a modest $2.30ph in winter and $3.50ph in summer.

“We are fortunate in Randwick City to be in a strong financial position and we are not reliant on income from meters. We can deliver great services and facilities for our residents using well-managed rates income.

Mayor Noel D’Souza said that merger plans with Waverley Council are not reliant on parking meters.

“Our planning for a potential merger with Waverley Council has been undertaken using the Randwick service provision model as the basis and as such is not reliant on income from parking meters.

“In fact, our financial planning has found a Randwick-Waverley merger will deliver cost benefits over 10 years of $103M and this involves no change to existing parking meters.

“Our merger proposal with Waverley Council has been deemed by IPART to be fit for the future and by proposing a smaller eastern beaches council we have safeguarded our community against the threat of a global city council,” Mayor D’Souza said.
