Regional approach to sustainability

Council will join with James Cook University to launch Cairns EcoFiesta as part of the inaugural Tropical North Queensland EcoWeek.

The event will be held on 31 May, replacing the previous Sustainable Living Expo and JCU's Sustainability Fair. It will form part of a regional EcoWeek initiative that will include the Townsville, Cassowary Coast and Mareeba councils.

The Cairns EcoFiesta will be held at the Cruise Liner Terminal and will be complemented by JCU's Sustainability Symposium on 5 June.

EcoFiesta: 31 May 2015

The Cairns EcoFiesta is an annual celebration of environment and community. EcoFiesta is an evolution of the popular Sustainable Living Expo and builds on the success of this community event which has been held in Cairns since 2010.

Held close to World Environment Day, the EcoFiesta showcases all things sustainable in the Cairns region - from community garden and tree planting groups to fair trade shops and solar panel suppliers. It's a who's who of sustainability in a festival atmosphere.

The EcoFiesta is a free community event with a difference – fun, food and full of eco-inspiration.

EcoWeek: 29 May - 7 June 2015

EcoWeek sees community groups, environmental organisations, eco-minded businesses, learning institutions and government agencies across Tropical North Queensland combine their individual sustainability events and activities into a week-long festival. EcoWeek kicks off with the Cairns EcoFiesta and concludes with the James Cook University sustainability symposium.

Held around World Environment Day each year, EcoWeek is an opportunity for event organisers to reach a wider audience by holding their event under the EcoWeek banner.
