Regional Road Funding

The Southern Tasmanian Councils Authority (STCA) has called for an increase to regional road funding in southern Tasmania. Gathering for an STCA Board meeting in Huonville, Chairman Alderman Damon Thomas said that it was time there was a significant investment made in southern Tasmania’s regional roads.

“There are a number of roads in southern Tasmania that require urgent upgrades and attention. “For too long the focus of infrastructure spending has been in the north of the state and it is time that this imbalance is rectified.

“Across southern Tasmania regional roads such as the Highland Lakes road, the Tasman Highway, the Arthur Highway and the Huon Highway all need infrastructure funding. “These regional roads are key priority projects for the STCA.

“An infrastructure investment will not just improve safety for motorists but it will also act as a stimulant for the local economy. “Earlier this year the state government proposed to reduce the speed limit on regional roads highlighting the need for increased funding for regional roads.

“It is important to remember that the STCA, which represents the 12 southern councils, takes in more than 50 per cent of the Tasmanian population. “It is time to redress the balance and ensure that southern Tasmania is not the forgotten region,” Alderman Thomas said.

Huon Valley Mayor Robert Armstrong welcomed the STCA to Huonville and said that it was great for the Board to see first hand a key infrastructure priority in the Huon region. “Holding the STCA Board meetings around the southern region is a great way for the each member of the Authority to understand the local infrastructure needs of each community.

“Today I am pleased to be highlighting an important project for the Huon Valley Council. “During the recent federal election campaign, Labor promised $7.5 million to upgrade to the Channel Highway and replace the bridge across Skinners Creek.
