Remembering and honouring our Anzacs

Honouring, Remembering, Thanking and Renewing – the Department of Veteran Affairs has chosen these four words to recognize this year’s Anzac Day commemorations.

With Anzac Day just over two weeks away, community groups and RSL sub-branches across the region are busy putting in place final preparations for our country’s most important day of remembrance.

Falling on Friday, April 25, Mayor Deirdre Comerford said this year’s services will honour the 99th anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand Army Corps – the ANZAC’s – at Gallipoli.

“From Bloomsbury to Sarina, there are more than 20 Anzac Day services taking place across the region and I encourage all residents and visitors to our area to attend.”

Cr Comerford said the soldiers who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula created a legend, adding the word ‘Anzac’ to our vocabulary.

“They created the Anzac spirit – they showed us what courage, endurance and mateship is all about.”

Council wish to advise of a small change to this year’s Dawn Service in Mackay, with those marching asked to meet at Macalister Street (between Gordon and Alfred streets) at 4.30am for a 4.45am march to Jubilee Park – the dawn service commences at 5am.

Mackay’s Main Service will take place at Jubilee Park at 9.30am on Anzac Day, with those marching meeting at Sydney Street (Coles car park) at 8am.

With great honour, Mayor Deirdre Comerford, councillors and senior council staff will attend services across the region.
