Residents become Aussies on Australia Day
Wyong Shire will join hundreds of towns and regions in welcoming new citizens as part of Australia Day celebrations.
Fifty people from 18 countries will officially become Aussies at a special citizenship ceremony staged by Wyong Shire Council on Sunday, January 26.
“Australia Day is a special time for Australians to come together and celebrate our community and what we love about our country,” Mayor Doug Eaton said today.
“It’s a particularly momentous occasion for those Wyong Shire residents who will pledge their commitment to our nation and embrace the responsibilities and privileges of Australian citizenship.
“Sunday is also the 65th anniversary of Australian Citizenships. Since 1949, 4.6 million people have chosen to become Australia citizens.
Wyong’s ceremony will be held in the Civic Centre.
Those taking part will be the latest of about 200 local residents who became Australian citizens at ceremonies in Wyong Shire over the past year.
They originated from countries as diverse as Britain, Phillippines, South Africa, Nepal, Thailand, Russia, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, United States, Sweden, Ireland, Fiji, India, Malaysia, Netherlands and Cyprus.
The citizenship ceremony will be part of a bumper program of celebrations to mark Australia Day.
Mayor Eaton encouraged all Wyong Shire residents to join in local activities to help celebrate the national day.
