Sea Level Rise Community Seminar

Residents and ratepayers who have an interest in sea level rise and coastal planning are invited to join a panel of experts for a community seminar on sea level rise in Batemans Bay Monday 28 April 2014.

Mayor Lindsay Brown says Eurobodalla Shire Council has organised the seminar to help the community understand some of the issues and science around sea level rise. The seminar is a response to a motion put forward by Cr Milton Leslight and recent interest and discussion on the science of sea level rise locally.

"These issues include insuring coastal properties, NSW government policy, historic monitoring of local tidal levels and global and regional sea level rise projections and these will be discussed by our panel of expert speakers," said Cr Brown.

The expert speakers include Dr John Church, leader of the CSIRO's Coasts and Sea Level team; Mr Karl Sullivan, the general manager of Policy Risk and Disaster at the Insurance Council of Australia, and Mr Edward Couriel, the senior engineer of the Manly Hydraulics Lab. Mr Phil Watson, principal coastal specialist at the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage will also be on the panel.

The Mayor said by coming along to the seminar, residents can find out how these national and international experts are exploring and addressing sea level rise in their respective fields, and then ask their own questions.

"We are very lucky these speakers have agreed to come to Batemans Bay and share their knowledge and experience with us," said Brown.

"The seminar will be a unique opportunity for residents, ratepayers and councillors and I would like to encourage anyone who is interested in sea level rise and coastal planning to come along."
