Shire focuses on economic development

The Shire of Broome is bringing the local business community onboard as it continues working to secure the town’s financial future.

Council has given the go-ahead to a range of new economic development initiatives including the release of a Shire of Broome Economic Profile as the first stage in the development of an Economic Development Strategy, the creation of a Shire of Broome Investment Prospectus, and the introduction of a quarterly Business Breakfast Series.

The key projects are the latest outcomes of the Shire’s Economic Development Advisory Group that brings together key stakeholders including the Kimberley Development Commission, LandCorp, Broome Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Yawuru Native Title Holders and representatives of industries including tourism, construction, agriculture and resources.

Shire of Broome Chief Executive Officer, Kenn Donohoe, said the Shire was listening to the town’s business community and was finding ways of working in partnership.

“The Economic Profile is a summary of up-to-date information on Broome’s economy and identifies the challenges and opportunities that need to be addressed, and will be of considerable use to those looking to invest in Broome,” Mr Donohoe said.

“The next stage is to develop a Broome Investment Prospectus that will be used to attract investment to Broome, and the Shire is now working with LandCorp, the Kimberley Development Commission, Kimberley Training Institute and the Broome Chamber of Commerce and Industry to have this important document completed by the end of the year.

“It is anticipated all of these elements will then be incorporated into an overarching Economic Development Strategy that will guide Broome’s economy into the future.”

The Broome Business Breakfast Series is expected to launch in November and will bring together the business community and other stakeholders.

“These free events will be an opportunity to communicate directly with businesses in Broome and to update them on what is happening in economic development, with guest speakers to be invited from industry and government as required,” Mr Donohoe said.
