Shoalhaven City Council eligible for disaster funding assistance

The declaration means Shoalhaven City Council will be eligible to claim a substantial amount of the funds required for repairs and maintenance undertaken as a result of the damage caused by the storm event.

Following a detailed assessment undertaken by Council staff, the area was found to have endured a repair bill of over $1 million, well in excess of the $270,000 required to trigger the declaration.

Mayor, Joanna Gash welcomed today’s announcement saying the additional funding from the NSW State Government will enable maintenance works to be expedited in parts of the City.

“The heavy rain and flooding experienced by the area had an impact on the area’s roads and reserves,” said Clr Gash.

“Council road maintenance crews prioritised minor safety repairs in the days and weeks following the rain event including the restoration of flood damaged roads.

“While this work continues, the focus is now gradually shifting to major repair works needed as a result of serious road slips.”

“Council has already engaged specialist contractors to assist in the design and construction of these larger projects.”

“Further to this, Council is continuing to undertake additional repairs and clean up around affected waterways, parks and reserves while also removing any debris that may have collected at these points.”

Mayor Gash said that under the State Government’s declaration, Council will need to make a claim with the relevant funding body (RMS, Public Works and Crown Lands) on completion of repair works. For further information visit http://www.shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au/Home.aspx
