Skate place will be the first of its kind in Australia
Skate place will be the first of its kind in Australia
Wyong Shire Council and Convic will unveil a draft final concept next week for the skate place at Bateau Bay that will take skating in Australia to an international high.
The community are encouraged to come along and see it at one of the community workshops on Thursday 8 October at Bateau Bay PCYC from 4-6pm or 7-9pm.
Convic’s Senior Landscape Architect, Bryce Hinton, said the competition bowl designed for the skate place will be a major destination for bowl riding in Australia.
“The competition bowl was created from the feedback we received in earlier workshops and online surveys and was designed in conjunction with Renton Millar (former Australian pro competing on the international stage) – it is truly a unique bowl design for Wyong Shire,” Mr Hinton said.
“We will have a 3D fly through of the entire facility on display at the workshops so participants can get a closer look at what they could potentially be riding.
“But the area is more than a bowl - we also have a competition street area, additional street plaza, a unique flow bowl for beginner to intermediate riders and large spectator areas.
“I recommend anyone with an interest in riding, BMX, blades, scooter, quads or even just watching skate, should come along and see it to believe it!”
The $2.25 million skate place at Bateau Bay is part of Council’s Skate Strategy for the Shire and is scheduled to open in July 2016.
Council’s Landscape Architect, Mr Boyd McMillan, said this is the result you get when you work with experienced skate designers.
“Convic are one of the world leaders in designing skate parks,” Mr McMillan said.
“They have actively engaged our local community and riders from all around Australia from the beginning to help us create a skate place that will cater for all abilities and potentially attract major competitions to the region.
“Next week’s workshop is the last chance to have your say on the final design before it’s signed off and under construction.
“Skating is growing in Wyong Shire and we are growing with it.
“At the last meeting, Council approved the go ahead for a $1.5 million skate place to be built at the northern end of the Shire.
“The design will be done next year and we will be actively calling on the community for their feedback on what elements they would like to see in the Lake Munmorah skate place.
“While this one will be smaller than Bateau Bay, it will still be a great place to ride and is scheduled to be built in the 2016/17 financial year.”
