SouthWest 2 sale plots course for jobs growth

Logan City Council's long term strategy to drive jobs growth in Logan has received a vote of confidence from the private sector with the recent sale of industrial land in Berrinba.

This week, the 21 hectare site known as SouthWest 2, on the corner of Wembley and Bardon Rds, was sold by Council to property investor The GPT Group for $23.2 million.

The GPT Group holds interests in a number of industrial properties across Australia, including the nearby Toll Transport facility on Forest Way, Berrinba.

Governance, Finance and Economic Development Committee Chairperson, Councillor Luke Smith (Division 6), said the land sale could potentially create 1,000 new jobs in the City of Logan.

"SouthWest 2's direct access to the Logan Motorway and its location between Brisbane and the Gold Coast makes it ideal as a well-connected precinct for logistics and technology-related industries as well as other businesses," he said.

"This land sale, coupled with the master-planned urban–village and business park development happening down the road at SouthWest 1, have placed Logan Central as a centre for business development."

Cr Smith said it was pleasing to see Council's long term vision for the site realised.

"We began preparing the site for sale in late 2011 in anticipation that it would one day become a key employment hub," he said.

"To see an experienced property group like GPT realising its potential and investing more than $23 million to acquire the site is a great vote of confidence for business in the region."

Cr Smith said the net profits from the land sale would be used by Council to fund future initiatives.
