Special Olympics State Games coming to Bendigo in 2015
On April 11 and 12, 2015 more than 350 Special Olympics athletes from across Victoria will gather in Bendigo to participate in the annual Special Olympics State Summer Games.
The Special Olympic State Summer Games is a celebration of athletes with an intellectual disability reaching their personal best in a multi-sport weekend of competition.
Sports included in the games include aquatics, athletics, bocce, cricket, equestrian, golf, softball and tennis.
State Games Manager Kevin O’Byrne said it is a tremendous achievement for athletes to be selected to represent their local region at the state games each year.
“We are delighted with the support of City of Greater Bendigo in hosting and sponsoring the games,” said Mr O’Byrne.
He said the opening ceremony will be held on the Saturday April 11 at the Dai Gum San Chinese Precinct and the state dinner will take place at the magnificent Bendigo Town Hall.
City of Greater Cr Rod Fyffe said the city is delighted to welcome the State Summer Games to Greater Bendigo next year.
“This is a terrific event that will bring a lot of athletes and their families to Greater Bendigo. It will also showcase some of the great facilities that we have on offer and is a great event for our city to have secured. It’s great for tourism and fantastic for our local community.
“The City of Greater Bendigo is working hard to attract events and today’s announcement adds to the long list of sporting events we have secured in recent times,” said Cr Fyffe.
Further details of the sports competition venues, fixtures and times will be made available closer to the games in 2015.
