Storm Damage

Council's priority is to ensure all our roads remain open and safe, and that our public spaces are safe for the community

High rainfall over an extended period combined with damaging winds and abnormally high tides has led to damage to some of Council infrastructure:

  • Shared path at Nightcliff foreshore
  • Path along Mindil Beach (in front of SkyCity Casino)
  • Erosion of the sand dunes at Mindil Beach
  • Blow holes at East Point on Council land and on NT Government land

Sections of the damaged shared paths will be temporarily fenced off for construction workers. Please take care when in these areas.

Council staff are monitoring all assets on an ongoing basis:

  • Addressing the debris and sand on the shared pathways
  • Replenishing and scraping the sand dunes on Mindil beach

A Coastal Erosion Management Plan was put to Council in June last year where the study’s recommendations were estimated to cost around $3.8m. Examples of potential actions include: loose rock placement, divert or re-locate stormwater discharge, maintenance work on the rock seawall at Mindil

Council will be looking to the other levels of government to help with the costs, and will also plan budget for this project within our annual budget planning.
