Strong response to Mayor Yarwood’s visit

The future direction of the City Centre’s $18.6 million revamp is thrust into the spotlight on Wednesday (September 18) with a thought-provoking presentation from CBD guru and Lord Mayor of Adelaide City Stephen Yarwood.

About 200 City Centre traders, owners and interested business leaders will attend the free presentation, which Mackay Regional Council sees as a catalyst to the planned City Centre Public Realm Improvement Project.

Mayor Deirdre Comerford applauded local business operators and retailers for their positive approach to the special presentation.

“It is imperative we get this project right and the strong response to Wednesday night indicates the passion and interest traders and business owners have about the type of changes and vision we want for our City Centre,” she said.

“Council working in partnership with the business community can deliver a lasting legacy for our CBD.”

Lord Mayor Yarwood comes to the region at the invitation of Mayor Deirdre Comerford and is not being paid any consultancy fee for his presentation or advice during a three-day stay.

“Stephen is passionate about developing cities and wants us to captalise on our strengths and create opportunities,” she said.

He boasts a vast knowledge of urban planning, having previously worked in Local and State Government. He’s researched or lectured on environment and development planning in Denmark, United States, Canada, New Zealand, India, the Phillippines, Singapore and Thailand.

The 42 year old was elected to Adelaide City Council in 2007, became Deputy Lord Mayor in 2009 and was elected to the Lord Mayoral role in 2010.

“It’s exciting to be able to hear from a well-respected, inspirational man who has a passion to see every city reach its full potential,” Cr Comerford said.

Economic Development portfolio councilor Greg Martin said a unified approach can help transform the precinct into a modern, vibrant and accessible City Centre.

“We want our traders, owners and business leaders to help influence our CBD and provide a fresh new future,” he said.

The Mackay City Centre hasn't been refurbished for more than 20 years.

"The $18.6 million in Regional Development Australia - Mackay Regional Council funding is a fantastic opportunity to create a precinct that is unique, interactive and welcoming." Cr Martin said.
