Tenants urged to talk about bin choice
Tenants across the Port Macquarie-Hastings local government area are being urged to talk to their real estate agent or property owner about Council’s new waste collection service if they haven’t done so already.
Council is gearing up for the start of its new service on 1 September by asking ratepayers to choose between a 140 litre fortnightly ‘Minimiser’ service, a 240 fortnightly ‘Standard’ service and a 240 litre weekly ‘Excess’ service. Residents are also being given the option of a free upgrade to a 360 litre yellow recycling bin.
As part of its ‘Choose Your Bin’ campaign, Council has provided all local real estate agents and property owners with information about the new service options. Council’s Director Development and Environment, Matt Rogers, said it was now a case of tenants discussing their bin needs with their real estate agent or property owner.
“Council is providing as much information as possible about the new service options and about ways for people to reduce the amount of household waste ending up as landfill - but ultimately service selection is a matter for real estate agents, property owners and tenants to discuss,” Mr Rogers said.
While the final decision for each property will rest with the property owner (as opposed to the tenant), Mr Rogers is encouraging property owners to chat with their tenants about future arrangements.
“Ideally the decision in each case should be a joint one based on the waste disposal needs of each household and Council’s overall aim of reducing the volume of household waste going to landfill,” Mr Rogers said.
Property owners are being asked to register their bin choice before the end of the month (April 30), meaning those tenants who still haven’t heard from their real estate agent or property owner should contact them as soon as possible.
